The Most Dangerous Places for Your Car to Break Down (And What to Do)

No one plans for their vehicle to break down—but where it happens can make all the difference. Some locations are much more dangerous than others, and knowing how to respond can help keep you and your passengers safe.

🚗 1. On the Highway

A breakdown on I-64, I-264, or any busy highway is one of the most dangerous situations. High-speed traffic gives drivers very little time to react.

What to do:

  • Turn on your hazard lights immediately.
  • If possible, pull completely onto the shoulder.
  • Stay inside your vehicle with your seatbelt fastened if traffic is moving quickly.
  • Call for professional roadside assistance or a tow truck.

🌉 2. On a Bridge or Overpass

Bridges have little to no shoulder, making them especially hazardous.

What to do:

  • If the vehicle can still move, continue to the end of the bridge before stopping.
  • If it won't move, turn on your hazards, stay in the vehicle, and call for help.

🌧️ 3. During Heavy Rain or Severe Weather

Rain reduces visibility, creates slick roads, and increases stopping distances.

What to do:

  • Use your hazard lights.
  • Stay off the roadway.
  • Never stand near moving traffic or attempt repairs in unsafe conditions.

🌙 4. At Night

Darkness makes it harder for other drivers to see you.

What to do:

  • Keep your hazard lights on.
  • If you have reflective triangles or flares, place them only if it is safe to do so.
  • Stay in a well-lit area whenever possible.

🚧 5. On Curves or Blind Hills

Drivers may not see your disabled vehicle until it's too late.

What to do:

  • Move your vehicle if it's safe.
  • Exit only if you can reach a safe location away from traffic.
  • Call for professional assistance as soon as possible.

Safety Comes First

Your vehicle can be repaired or towed—but your safety is irreplaceable. If you're ever unsure, don't risk trying to fix the problem yourself in a dangerous location. Call a trusted towing professional and let trained operators handle the situation.

At Angel's Towing & Recovery, we're proud to help drivers throughout Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Chesapeake get to safety quickly and professionally.
