Dead Battery or Bad Alternator? How to Tell Before Calling for Help

You turn the key or press the start button—and nothing happens. Before assuming you need a new battery, remember that the alternator could also be responsible. These parts work together, but they perform different jobs.
Knowing the warning signs can help you explain the problem when requesting roadside assistance or towing in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, or Norfolk.
What Does the Battery Do?
Your battery supplies the electrical power needed to start your vehicle. It also powers accessories such as the lights, radio, and dashboard when the engine is off.
Common signs of a weak or dead battery include:
- The engine does not crank or cranks very slowly.
- You hear rapid clicking when attempting to start.
- The headlights and interior lights appear dim.
- The dashboard lights turn on, but the engine does not start.
- The vehicle starts after receiving a jump.
- The battery is swollen, leaking, or has corrosion around its terminals.
A jump start may get you moving if the battery was drained by something simple, such as leaving the lights on. However, an old or damaged battery may need to be replaced.
What Does the Alternator Do?
Once the engine starts, the alternator produces electricity and recharges the battery. It also supplies power to the vehicle’s electrical systems while you drive.
Warning signs of a failing alternator may include:
- The battery warning light remains illuminated.
- Headlights become brighter or dimmer while driving.
- The radio, power windows, or dashboard electronics behave strangely.
- You notice a whining or grinding sound near the engine.
- You smell burning rubber or overheated electrical wiring.
- The vehicle starts after a jump but soon shuts off again.
- The engine stalls while you are driving.
If the alternator is not charging properly, a jump start may only provide a temporary solution. The vehicle could stop again after the remaining battery power is exhausted.
A Simple Way to Tell the Difference
If your vehicle starts with a jump and continues running normally, the battery may have been discharged or weakened. If it starts but dies again shortly afterward, the alternator or charging system may be the problem.
These signs are only a basic guide. Loose connections, damaged cables, a faulty starter, or another electrical problem can produce similar symptoms. A professional battery and charging-system test is the safest way to identify the exact cause.
Never disconnect the battery while the engine is running to “test” the alternator. That outdated method can damage modern vehicle electronics.
What Should You Do When Your Car Will Not Start?
Follow these steps:
- Move the vehicle out of traffic if you can do so safely.
- Turn on the hazard lights.
- Check whether any headlights or interior lights were left on.
- Look for loose or heavily corroded battery connections without touching leaking or damaged components.
- Avoid repeatedly attempting to start the engine, which can further drain the battery.
- Request a jump start or towing service if the vehicle remains disabled.
If the vehicle stalls on I-64, I-264, or another busy road, stay aware of surrounding traffic. If you can safely exit the vehicle, move to a protected location away from travel lanes. Call 911 when the disabled vehicle creates an immediate traffic hazard or you are in danger.
Can an EV Receive a Jump Start?
Electric vehicles generally contain a conventional 12-volt battery that powers important electronics and allows the vehicle’s main systems to activate. That battery may sometimes require a jump, but procedures vary by manufacturer.
Always follow the owner’s manual. Never attempt to jump or touch an EV’s high-voltage battery system. If you are unsure, request professional assistance and tell the towing company that the vehicle is electric.
