🚗 Flooded Vehicle? Here's What to Do (And What NOT to Do)

Heavy rain and flash flooding can leave your vehicle sitting in water—and what you do next can make the difference between a repairable vehicle and a totaled one.

🚫 Don't Try to Start It

If floodwater reached your engine, do not turn the key or press the start button. Water inside the engine can cause hydrolock, leading to severe engine damage that may not be covered if the damage results from repeated start attempts.

✅ What to Check First

Before doing anything else:

  • 📸 Take photos of the water level around your vehicle and any visible damage.
  • 🌊 Check how high the water reached. If it covered the bottom of the doors or reached the engine bay, avoid starting the vehicle.
  • 👃 Look for mud, debris, or a musty smell inside the cabin.
  • 🔋 If it's safe, disconnect the battery to help prevent electrical issues. If you're unsure, wait for a professional.

📞 Contact Your Insurance Company

If you have comprehensive coverage, flood damage is often covered. When you call:

  • Provide photos and videos of the damage.
  • Tell them where the vehicle is located.
  • Ask whether they want the vehicle inspected before it's moved.
  • Write down your claim number and adjuster's contact information.

Keep all receipts for towing or emergency services—you may be eligible for reimbursement depending on your policy.

🚛 Have the Vehicle Towed

A flooded vehicle should be transported on a tow truck, not driven. Even if it starts later, water may have damaged the engine, transmission, brakes, electronics, or safety systems.

At Angel's Towing & Recovery, we can safely transport your vehicle to your home, repair shop, or insurance-approved facility throughout Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Chesapeake.
